Four Months In: How uGlow Is Rewriting Beauty Education

Four months ago, uGlow Education was an idea with a lot of conviction behind it: that beauty students deserve more than a certificate. They deserve real skills, real confidence, and a real route to earning a living.

Today, it’s a proven model — taught in colleges, live online, and already putting qualified spray tan artists into work. Here’s how far we’ve come, and why it matters for the whole industry.

The idea: bridge the gap between the classroom and the salon

Too many talented students leave beauty courses with a qualification but no clear next step. We wanted to close that gap — to build a way of teaching that mixes the flexibility of online learning with the hands-on practice that this industry actually runs on.

So we built a blended learning journey. Students work through the theory online, in their own time, then step into a practical workshop led by industry professionals. They’re assessed, certified, and — crucially — supported long after the training ends.

The online platform is live today at ourskinacademy.com, with 33 lessons spanning theory, technique and business development. Students arrive at the practical day already knowing their stuff, so the hands-on time is spent building genuine skill.

The proof: colleges that keep coming back

Ideas are easy. Proof is harder — so we started with two colleges who were willing to test it properly: Darlington College and Grimsby Institute.

The results spoke for themselves. Across both cohorts, 94% of students said they’d recommend the programme, and every single one said they enjoyed the training. But the number we’re proudest of is a quieter one: 81% told us they now want to start their own business. That’s the whole point — not just teaching a skill, but opening a door.

And here’s the real vote of confidence. Darlington has asked us back. Grimsby has run with us two years running. And we’ve now been confirmed at Middlesbrough College too. Anyone can win a first booking. Colleges only come back when it works.

The people: from the classroom to trading

The best measure of the model isn’t a statistic — it’s the people already out there doing it.

Six graduates from our first cohorts are now placed as uGlow ambassadors and technicians. Some are promoting the brand and earning commission. Others are trading under their own name: one of our graduates now runs her own spray tan business and has already picked up a five-star review praising her professional, welcoming approach.

That’s the journey we set out to build — classroom, to certificate, to income — and it’s happening within months, not years.

And certification is where the business support really begins. Through uGlow × Inkedfluence — our social media and influence training, led by Siobhan — graduates learn how to turn their new skill into visibility and real bookings: building a professional profile, creating content that earns trust, and growing across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. During the training itself, groups were challenged to create their own content — and we crowned the standout winners, who took home uGlow product as their prize. Because the truth about the modern beauty industry is simple — you don’t need a salon to start earning. You need a skill and an audience, and we help our graduates build both.

Why it matters for the industry

The beauty industry doesn’t just need more qualified people. It needs qualified people who are confident, business-minded, and ready to raise the standard of the work being offered to clients.

A blended model makes that scalable. Because the theory lives online and only the practical needs to be in the room, the same quality of training that worked in Darlington and Grimsby can travel to any college, anywhere — with consistent standards, consistent certification, and a support network that doesn’t disappear the moment the workshop ends.

For salons, it means a pipeline of therapists trained to a genuine professional standard. For students, it means a real start. For the industry, it means the bar goes up.
